DIY How to Build a Curved Plaster Hood Vent

Plaster hood vents are one of those timeless but current design elements I love. So naturally I asked Garrett to build me one at the Dexter House and then the Porch House and now at the Poplar Cottage. This time around Garrett threw in some curves and this changed the construction a bit. So today Garrett’s taking us through this new process he came up with to build a curved hood vent…

Okay, so technically this hood vent (and the previous ones Garrett built) isn’t made of actual plaster, but ‘dry-wall-mud’ just doesn’t have the same ring to it. Forgive the bait and switch.
Creating the curves for this hood, was definitely more difficult than the boxy ones at Dexter and the Porch House, but still DIY-able. The key steps are all laid out in the video below…
DIY Curved Plaster Hood Vent
Materials and Tools
vent insert (we used this one)
1/4” lath
outside corner bead (for external corners)
paper joint tape (for internal corners)
Tools
oscillating multi-tool (highly recommend this tool - it comes in really handy!)

And there you have it…a curved plater hood vent! I’m pretty smitten with this thing, so let’s take a look at a few more photos of the finished product.
Oh! Did you notice the unlacquered brass sconces we installed? I was too excited to wait for paint before installing these, so they’re just temp’ed up here for now. But aren’t they lovely? Goodness I just love this stage of a renovation, when things start coming together!
