Our 3 Potty Training Essentials for Any Bathroom (+ what our Main Bathroom Looks Like Now)

THE FARMHOUSE

We’ve been up to something big at our Farmhouse this summer…and I don’t mean the kitchen remodel. Daphne is potty training! This is our third go around with potty training and with each kid we’ve fine-tuned our process a bit. Over the years, we’ve found that there are just 3 simple things we need in a bathroom in order to get a kid potty-trained. So today I wanted to share our 3 potty-training essentials and show how we’ve revamped our main bathroom to work for adults, big kids, and potty-trainers too.

potty-training in a main/guest bathroom

Remember our main bathroom? It’s the only bathroom on the first floor of our Farmhouse and boy is it hardworking. The kids use it all. day. long. And the adults in the family do too. It doubles as our guest bathroom when we’re hosting friends. And for a few weeks this summer, this bathroom even tripled as our kitchen.

Believe it or not, one bathroom can handle all these things and still look good. Potty training doesn’t have to take over a space, as long as you’re careful to only bring in the essentials. Have a look…

Let’s talk about our potty-training essentials…

one // A comfortable Potty Chair!

A comfortable potty chair is priority number one at our house when it comes to getting kids to enjoy sitting on the toilet. And we love how the Little2Big seat works for both kids and adults. It’s the perfect compromise for a hardworking bathroom like this one! The Little2Big seat installs like a regular toilet seat (it took us maybe 5 minutes), but unlike a regular toilet seat, this one has two seats. One small, one big. When Daphne’s ready to go potty, we let her flip down the little seat by herself (she’s 2 and loves doing anything and everything by herself 🙃) and then we set her up there.

And bonus, the Little2Big has a slow close, so no slamming toilet seats or pinched fingers!

Two // treats

Yes, we bribe our kids with treats during potty training. This is a trick we picked up with our second kid. For the first, we didn’t need or use any candy. Instead he got the full attention of two adults. Because we can’t give that to kid #2 and #3, we introduced a treats-for-all policy. When Daphne goes potty on the potty, all 3 kids get a treat. And wouldn’t you know it, Daphne’s older brothers are her biggest cheerleaders. They ask if she has to go potty all day long. And when she does, they cheer louder than anyone. Daphne loves it! Her older brother’s love it. And Mama and Dada love it, too.

These treat containers will phase out when Daphne doesn’t need the extra encouragement. But for the time being, they work great!

Three // Books

I like to get something in our potty-trainers hands the moment they sit on the toilet. That way they don’t feel the need to pull down the entire roll of toilet paper or get their hands into who knows what. So we keep a stack of kid books near the potty. We often read Daphne a story when she sits on the potty, too. Sometimes the boys will join in and flip through a book or play instruments for her. We like to keep the atmosphere fun, low-key, and positive.

Those are our 3 potty-training essentials for the bathroom. I’d love to hear what works for your family!
